STIGMA

Stigma is when someone views you in a  negative way because you have a distinguishing characteristic or personal trait that's thought to be a negative stereotype.
Stigma can lead to discrimination.Discrimination may be obvious and direct,such as someone making a negative remark about your mental illness or your treatment,Or it may be unintentional whereby one may end up avoiding you because the person assumes you could be dangerous or violent.This may cause one to end up judging themselves
Some of the harmful effects of stigma can include;
1.Reluctance to seek help or treatment.
2.Lack of understanding by family members, friends, co-workers or other people.
3.Fewer opportunities for work,school or social activities.
4.Bullying, physical violence or harassment.
5.Health insurance that doesn't adequately cover your mental illness treatment.
6.Belief that you'll never succeed at certain challenges or that you can't improve your situation.
The following steps may help one to cope with stigma.
